UniFi U7 Pro Roof-Mounted Wi-Fi Testing on a Rural Property
This article will document real-world testing of a UniFi U7 Pro installed high on a rural property roof.
The goal is to test whether a roof-mounted access point can provide useful outdoor coverage across sheds, yards, driveways and nearby property areas.
What I Want to Test
- Practical outdoor range
- Speed at different distances
- Performance through walls and sheds
- Roaming behaviour with existing UniFi access points
- Device stability
- Whether roof mounting is worth the effort
Test Areas
Planned test locations include:
- Around the house
- Driveway
- Shed area
- Gate approach
- Water tank area
- Paddock-facing side of the property
Test Results
Results will be added once testing is complete.
Planned measurements:
| Location | Distance | Signal | Download | Upload | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| House exterior | TBD | TBD | TBD | TBD | TBD |
| Shed | TBD | TBD | TBD | TBD | TBD |
| Driveway | TBD | TBD | TBD | TBD | TBD |
| Gate | TBD | TBD | TBD | TBD | TBD |
Early Thoughts
Roof mounting should improve line-of-sight coverage, but the real question is whether the improvement is enough to justify the extra effort compared with a simpler wall-mounted access point.
This will be updated after testing.
